In 1974 I was a student at the Hebrew University and living in dorms on Mt. Scopus. One Shabbat afternoon, there was some unusual activity/hubub on my floor and I asked my Israeli roommate what it was all about.

Impressing upon me the required secrecy and danger, she explained that the Druze had just helped a young Jewish girl escape from Syria....a very risky endeavor for all involved and one that the Druze were uniquely qualified to help with. I think this sort of thing should be acknowledged in addition to their many other contributions to the country and to the IDF.

Thank you for reading Rabbi Sacks' z'l words out loud, in your beautiful voice, with your beautiful face shining bright. You give me a lot of strength, Eve. I hope you draw the same from the Rabbi's words, from putting your own words down, and reminding yourself every Shabbat or whenever you need it most, we really are a magnificent people.

May the memories of those innocent children’s forever be for a blessing. And, Israel needs to take the gloves off with Hezbollah. The world already hates it, anyway.

Wish you were correct about the world hating hezbollah, but I think not. Who gives a shit what the world thinks when Israel is in the right.

No, I wasn’t clear in what I wrote. I meant that the world already hates Israel, so it should take off the gloves and go after Hezbollah.

I agree about the utilitarian argument & have written about it too. While I’d argue against utilitarianism on multiple points, the most obvious one, to me, is that certain evils cannot be quantified. They are categorically different. If 10 people die from a barbaric massacre, and 100 die as casualties of war, I cannot agree that the latter is a higher cost. Barbarism can’t be quantified bc it’s infinite in terror & sadism.

Also, I’m very sad about the loss of the Druze children as well. They are good & hospitable & loyal citizens. Meanwhile, where’s the world now? It’s all so devastating.

Thank you Eve for your moral clarity. My late husband used to say “Jewish blood is cheap”. I would amend that to say that only the Jews value Israeli and Jewish blood wherever it is shed. It is so painful to me to see that it is barely even reported in the news or social media. The only ppl who mourn for the lives lost in this never ending war are the Jews and Israeli ppl. We stand alone to protect ourselves and we mourn alone. Eve keep your voice strong!

You are incorrect in believing that you are alone and unsupported. While you as a Jew may seem to be isolated and unsupported by others of different faiths , you are far from alone. There are many of us who support you in visible and invisible ways with out prayers, time , talent and treasure. Hatred and evil must be called out and fought against wherever and whenever it exists. The Hamas atrocities need to be called out as such and the Israeli response is fully justified.

So many truths in what you say Sharon, especially that “we mourn alone” That one really stings, doesn’t it. 🇮🇱

Thank you for informing me about the Druze! I read the report of the slaughter of the children with horror, even though not aware of who the Druze are as a people. It simply proves that the Iranians and their proxies are truly savages!

Excellent post, very insightful. Once again expressing the outrage and frustrations many of us feel but lack the ability Eve has to put forcefully into words.

I never would have guessed you for a Kantian--but now I know.

You read Sacks' essay beautifully.

I greatly appreciate your posts and the insight you provide into the evils of Islamism. The horrific slaughter of school children just demonstrates the ridiculousness of those calling for an immediate ceasefire and the "two state solution." Both were in existence until the October attacks. As the phrase goes...how did that work out?

Just a note on another subject, JD Vance does NOT promote a national ban on abortion. He is a practicing Catholic and like me would love it if there were no abortions. But we are also Constitutionalists, and pragmatists. The demise of Roe v Wade sent the decision on this practice back to the states. A national ban, like the previous national legalization of abortion is not Constitutional. Hence the Dobbs case.

Some have selective morality, as we see in the campus protests. But I believe most people make their best choice among candidates with conflicting morality on many issues. Then there’s also the weighing of the likelihood of an agenda getting passed. With the scientific advances in genetic genealogy, I don’t believe there’s a chance abortion will be made illegal across most of the country. If I had my way, all children born to single females requesting taxpayer assistance would have their paternity traced and wages garnished. Vasectomies and condom sales would skyrocket.
