Good Morning from DownUnder! The place of the Jewish community in Sydney's and Melbourne's annual gay pride events has been contested here in the past two years - it's not just an Italian thing.
But my observation from the outside is that the events have slowly morphed into exclusionary spaces for all - you have to be the Right Kind of Gay/Ally to participate. Nothing like the "Welcome to our party" vibe of the 1990s when I was delighted to spend the evening at Mardi Gras with a bunch of fellow straight couples.
Overall, if feels like a generational shift. Gen Xers are being sidelined and there is a rise of a highly-online highly-vocal highly-ignorant cohort who are bullying everyone in their path.

Then they'd lead gangs to those kulak farms, arrest or murder the farmers and their families, and take over the farms in the name of "people." Over 1.5 million kulaks and their families were displaced as the regions were turned into vast collective farms. And of course with all the best farmers murdered or driven from the fields, these collective farms were generally huge failures, often barely producing enough food to feed themselves, much less provide for the rest of the country.
The Nazis did the same thing in pre-war Germany, recruiting from the rabble in the beer halls, pointing to the people around them who were more successful and playing on their perceived victimhood.
Both societies turned from aspirational to resentful, celebrating victimhood, decrying success, and treating anyone who belonged to certain perceived groups as evil no matter their personal morals and values.
Whenever that's happened throughout history, it's a really really really bad omen. And now these idiots are doing it again.
It's the resentment that is the first symptom. Can't afford a Victorian in Ditmas Park or a Brooklyn Heights brownstone? Complain, accuse, demonize, destroy. My older brother was the first to graduate with a bachelors degree. I put myself through college. My sons received undergraduate business degrees and they're now around forty and both are millionaires. They also work, as my dad would say, like three men and a mule.
