Re: sad story of Mr. Arday. It’s a sort of reverse racism, isn’t it, to imagine that Mr. Arday was incapable of fraud. Black people are the same as the rest of us, subject to every one of the seven deadly sins.
I don't use the qualifier "reverse" racism because to me that implies there are different kinds or degrees of racism. A pet peeve of mine on the language. What a sad ending to his life and I lay it squarely in the lap of the racists who elevated him.
Of course it is. It was inevitable that affirmative action/DEI/EDI would produce reverse racism. But those who promote /adhere to that ideology have changed the definition of racism to convince themselves that oppressed groups cannot be racist to oppressor groups. Hence Eve's reference to circle jerking.
It's remarkable, isn't it? The people who are most responsible for the death of Mr. Arday were the people who encouraged him to be a fraud, and to put himself in an untenable position. He reeled out bigger and bigger lies, and they nodded and smiled and clapped. And now they point fingers and say it's the people who questioned his lies who are at fault. Nobody should ever have popped his bubble.
He claimed that he ran 600 miles in six days, and 30 marathons in 35 days (and he also claimed some with a broken leg). He also said he was in a months long coma after being hit by a car, that he had epilepsy from being beaten up as a kid, he said he had a tumour in his testicle and in his brain, he also claimed he was so autistic he didn’t read or write until he was 18. That’s before the plagiarism investigation.
Yes, we do know he was a fraud. His old school chums have been interviewed, and said he was just a normal kid. Tacit and nonverbal are not the same thing.
Your story about Cambridge reminded me of the experience I had with my son applying to graduate school. Michael completed a double major in Physics and Computer Science in 3.5 years with a 3.9 GPA at RPI in Troy. He applied to 8 Tier One Universities in the USA and not one 'fat letter' arrived in the mail. We were absolutely heartbroken for him. Why did we not think he needed a Tier Two back-up... like Brandeis. Never in a million years did I think he would not get into one. I of course do not know whether he answered a question about religion, or about finances on his application. With great luck, one of his Physics teachers at RPI had a relationship with the Physics Department at William and Mary, and in the summer, the year of his graduation of RPI, he was admitted to W&M. He now has a PhD in Theoretic High Energy Particle Physics. A lesson for the future college students and parents here....
Reading your description of your Cambridge interview process reminded me of the cognate experience of my friend Fiona Hill recounted in her autobiography "There's Nothing for You Here."
In her case, she wasn't guilty of being a smart Jew. Rather, it was the class marker of her thick Jordie-Pitmatic accent. "If we admit her, will anyone understand what she's saying?"
I pitched a novel in the summer of 2020 to literary agents. Or, I tried to pitch it. That summer agents across the board requested that white people not pitch to them in order to make room for marginalized authors. I said to myself, fine. It’s fair, even though it’s reverse discrimination. After perusing just about every agent page website, it was apparent that at least 90% of the agents were white women.
I realized that it was just white progressives playing with a different power deck. Notice that you’ve never heard of anyone saying, “I’m going to resign my own job in order for the company to replace me with a marginalized person.” I call them benevolent gatekeepers, the self-appointed saviors who have no problem canceling the lives of whoever gets in their crosshairs and they do it from a place of perceived safety, as long as they have the right views for their peers. Now they’ve added, No Zionists to their lists. Might as well say no Jews.
Read this article from The Atlantic. Harper was a black professor at a New England college and he describes from the inside the attitudes of his colleagues.
You have a typo "Journalists must *never* be forced into silence"
And I'm pointing this out because I know you care, and I know you can handle being told you're imperfect :-)
Seriously, though - journalism is a real profession, just as politics. There are skills, and values, and ways of doing it well or badly, and they're important.
Pretending that any businessman can do politics or any guy with a camera can be a television journalist, that's not doing our society any favors.
The loudest voice wins?
I wish that you could have an even bigger platform, as your writing is among the best I've seen anywhere, and your principles are solid and clear.
Love your retort to Mamdani's smarmy post, supposedly comforting us that it was a singular incident and there's no "ongoing threat."
Yes, there is, schmuck. It's you and your friends and your murderous ideology.
As for poor Arday, he was a fraud and a fantasist, but even frauds and fantasists have feelings, and he paid the price for being a poster boy for diversity and inclusion. A very unlucky chap. One is sad for him.
Yes. 💯. The Jacobins, Communists, Marxists and Islamic Nazi Fascists will be in full attack mode with their usual bromides and racism excuses. Their attempts at the destruction of western civilization has never stopped even after the brief delay of WW ll. It kicked into full force in 1949 with the Russian support of North Korea. History repeats.
With respect to Arday, questions have been raised, including some from suspect sources. His University was about to investigate these questions. I know nothing of his scholarship. I know he has a very interesting backstory. We do not know his cause of death. But we owe it to him and to us to learn the truth, and to disseminate it come what may. Long live a free press.
Asking those kinds of questions would be a quiet admission that, A) they didn't do enough background investigation (Cambridge admin obviously did less investigation of the person responsible for *teaching* than they do of the *teached*) and B) bought into his lies.

Racism is racism is racism. Those who imagined Arday was incapable of fraud due to his skin color are racists.
Exactly.

Gotcha. Makes sense. And thanks for pointing that out.

It sounds familiar, come to think of it.
I am not certain that he was “encouraged” per se, but obviously people were reluctant to question his credentials.
Do we KNOW he was a fraud? lots of accusations. where are the facts?

At some point he started lying and just couldn't stop. And nobody in his professional orbit called him out.

She went to St. Andrews and did quite fine.
Wow. Interesting. I am a great fan of Fiona Hill! A real truth-teller.

Perhaps one of these days the see-saw will reach equilibrium.
Love your writing Eve. The anger, the clear thinking, the occasional humour.

Yes I read Eve for the voice of integrity.
Eve, you are very very smart. And very very very brave.
I'll give her three verys for the smart part too!

He loves gaslighting Jews. I love Eve calling him out on it.
To quote: “You fucked with the wrong Jew.”!
The best I can do is provide some moral and financial support… Never quit!!

Brilliant writing, Eve.
It's essays like this that got me here, keep me here. Well done.
Everyone should read this.
You are so spot on

Cambridge will I'm sure ask itself very serious questions about how this obvious fraud was hired.
Right?
Or maybe not.
Sigh
