Those on the right side of the aisle, as they say, have been dealing with this bunch for a couple decades or more. They. Do. Not. Listen. They don't want to hear. The fact that you disagree with them about even the smallest theological question (because it IS a religion) means you're an unperson, an evil heretic whose words mean no more than the buzzing of a fly around the ceiling light. Ask JK Rowling about that.
I'm a 74-year-old conservative. I'm not religious. I support Israel wholeheartedly. I'm a centrist on abortion. Since I'm an artist I've been a supporter of gay rights for over fifty years. So I'm hardly a knuckle-dragger. However, most of my family is liberal to progressive. I've tried to talk to them calmly, with logic and facts, and the result is I'm no longer welcome on holidays; not because I try to convince anyone of anything, not because I want to talk politics with any of them (I don't), but just because of what I believe.
The conservative commentator Charles Krauthammer once said, "The difference between the Left and the Right is, we think they're people with bad ideas. They think we're bad people with ideas."
If the Left in this country has a superpower, it's their ability to become instantly deaf to anyone who does not agree with them. Welcome to unperson-hood.
No one can seriously assume that individuals—who, in the face of the horrific, inhumane, and totalitarian reality prevailing across the several dozen unjust, Islamo-fascist states worldwide, fail to take a stand against these regimes—could possibly be reached by any rational, critical arguments anymore anyhow.
Perhaps they *could* be reached through prize competitions in which extended stays in these "wonderful" Islamo-fascist states are raffled off—featuring, as their respective highlights, self-organized LGBTQ-etc. "Pride" parades that would lead them straight into prison. And Good Riddance !
That aside, these idiots did not invent Jew-hatred. When it manifests so pervasively and incurably, one can clearly assume that, from an early age, they have known nothing else—that they were indoctrinated by their parents and families - the Holy Mother, the adorable Father etc. - , yet constantly drilled *not* to let any of this show to the outside world.
Outwardly, they were expected to say: "Never again".
Such bitter realities and hypocrisies, however, raise questions regarding the so-called "Western freedom" that is supposedly in need of "defense."
Yet these are entirely different questions than the ones "activists" seem to have in mind.
They are questions regarding whether "freedom"—as a solitary, supreme value—can truly endure at all, unless it is accompanied from the very start outset by other values such as (self-)critical capacity, responsibility, coherence, an understanding of context, and the like.
"Freedom" devoid of substance, context, and (self-)responsibility can, in reality, lead nowhere other than to fascism.
Agreed, agreed, agreed! I think about all the abuse that has been suffered by JK Rowling as well. And how very strange to suddenly identify with a people who would not tolerate your very existence. Even in our shul who prides itself on tolerence, both bathrooms are now marked as “all genders”. (Not fond of that.)

When I look around and see how many politicians, corporations and voters boarded the trans train and pound this drum daily, violently consuming everything in its path, I begin to understand how easily Mao took control of the inner mind to foment the murder and mayhem of The Cultural Revolution (CR). I had my first real life experience of this in the early 80's when I was taking polisci classes at the University of Houston and with an open mind I attended a talk by the PLO. The lecture hall was full and the talk was bizarre. The two PLO reps reminded me of the Sunday televangelist pumping out complete garbage while asking for dollars. They were obvious charlatans. I looked around the hall and every single person minus one Jewish man (he was wearing a yarmulke) looked to be in a trance, including a friend that had attended with me. The man and I locked eyes and nodded to each other, realizing we were the only two who hadn't been hypnotized. It was if some hypnotic gas had been pumped into the room and two of us were somehow immune. I speculate the need to go with the herd is so strong among the majority that as soon as they get a whiff of the direction of stampede, they hand their brains over and are willing to do unspeakable things along with their herdmates, just as the first casualty of the CR was a school administrator beat to death by a mob of middle-school girls. Columns like yours help to keep a network of us connected and supported, and to be ready to lead the herd back if/when the spell is broken.
In my book group we discuss the quality of the story and the quality of the writing. Eve, you get an A+ on both accounts. This might just be your most powerful piece yet. Thank you.
I sometimes wonder what would have happened had gay marriage not been legalized and all the non-profits who had worked so hard to achieve that hadn’t suddenly realized that now that their goal had been reached it was possible funding would not continue to flow. They needed to redirect and did so by boarding the “trans train” as someone else used in a comment on here. Would we have seen such a dramatic shift of people heralding everything trans regardless of whether it made sense or not?
To add to my above post, as I have been mulling over Eve’s Substack—I feel that I cannot even bring up the Israel-Gaza war with my very long time Jewish lesbian friends. This is extremely sad. To correct that, I do have one, and we do discuss it, although I can’t really use the word discuss, its more just stated positions and no discussion. But we do remain friends.

Evidence of the above is obvious to anyone who looks closely and sees professional demonstration organizers instructing their worker ants, "Don't talk to him - he's a ZIONIST!" Or the repeating slogans backed by war drums (literal war drums), drowning out rational thought and conscience. Plus the hysteria and anger of the keffiyeh crowd. They would never go nuts like that, over besieged Nigerian Christians, Bangladesh Hindus or even Muslims who suffer awful treatment at the hands of China or Myanmar. Their cause du jour is "Palestinians," but not Pals kicked out of Kuwait in '91, denied equal rights in Lebanon or other Muslim countries. It has to focus on Israel, or big yawn.
